Description
An incoming Gondola arrives to pick us up from the Observation Deck on Monarch Mountain, Colorado.
I stopped to stretch my legs at Monarch Pass on US 50 and spontaneously decided to zoom up the tram. The eight minute ride adds an additional 750 elevation gain from the pass, with absolutely stunning views on a sunny or partly cloudy day. The enclosed observation deck had panoramic photos with labels so you could identify which mountains you're gasping at. You can also walk around outside as long as you would like before returning to the bottom. It was fairly crowded at the base, but so much more quite since relatively few groups were interested in heading up the tram. It is windy most days at the top, so grab your sweatshirt and/or jacket even if it is really warm at the base. Oh, and FREE BAG OF POPCORN when you get back down to the bottom! You'll want to spend time in the gift shop, too...it has some neat stuff and more history about the area.
Monarch Mountain is located in south central Colorado only 2 hours from Colorado Springs and less than 3 hours from Denver. Located on Highway 50 on the Continental Divide, Monarch is easily accessible with unparalleled views!
Monarch Mountain is what you expect from a real Colorado ski area. Abundant natural snow (350+ inches) and friendly people are two of our strongest attributes. You can walk from your car right to the lifts, prices are reasonable, and the runs flow naturally back to the base area. At Monarch you'll lose the crowds but not your friends.
At the base of Monarch Pass lies the sunny Arkansas River Valley, with everything you need to make your visit complete. The towns of Salida and Buena Vista have great restaurants, galleries, shops, and a variety of accommodations. This winter come up and stay a few days and experience our mountain hospitality.
