The Town of Silverton, Colorado sleeps during the long, harsh Winters only to awaken to a Tourist Season that draws thousands of people each day, a bustling scene compared to this lonely street, reflections of closed businesses. The Moon hangs over the San Juan National Forest.
In 1860, Charles Baker and several prospectors entered the San Juan Mountains in search of wealth. They soon found deposits of gold and silver along the Animas River, in an area that was later called Baker's Park. The prospectors stayed through the summer but returned to what is now northern New Mexico for the winter. News spread of the discovery;z however, with the Civil War looming and the discovery being located on Ute Indian land, the miners did not return to the San Juan Mountains until early 1870s.
At that time nearly 1,000 prospectors once again ventured into the high country. The Utes protested, yet they could not stop the inexorable wave of miners and settlers that arrived over Stony Pass....
Janice Rae Pariza was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1955 and raised in Ohio, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Nova Scotia and Connecticut. She has been painting since the age of eight. A self taught painter, she supplemented her natural abilities by studying privately for 14 years. A realist in the medium oil, her subject matter has varied throughout the years. She has expanded into the realm of the Abstract and Impressionism. Extensive travel in the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean is reflected in her paintings and photography. ***15% of all proceeds are donated to the ASPCA.
