Description
Sapinero Mesa is a beautiful parcel of land boasting high-country shrublands, oak brush and scattered conifer and aspen stands, overlooking Blue Mesa Reservoir and the Dillon Pinnacles. The parcel is 911 acres in size.
Through a Resource Protection Study, the National Park Service has identified the property as a high acquisition priority and within a designated Conservation Opportunity Area due to its scenic, wildlife, and recreational characteristics. Sapinero Mesa occupies a hole in Curecanti National Recreation Area (NRA) that many believe should be made a part of the Park.
Sapinero Mesa enjoys iconic views of the Dillon Pinnacles across Blue Mesa Reservoir. Elk, deer and Gunnison sage grouse call this land home. In addition, the National Park Service has expressed a strong interest in building a new visitor center on a small portion of the property along Hwy. 50.
While the Park Service has wanted to acquire this property for many years, there are no funds available to purchase it. We now have an opportunity to save it from development.
Bear Ranch recently purchased the property for $2.7 million after consultations with the National Park Service. The Bear Ranch Land Exchange will convey this property to the National Park Service, saving it from development and opening it to public enjoyment forever.
Curecanti National Recreation Area is one of the most-visited attractions in all of Colorado, hosting about 1,000,000 visitors annually and generating millions of dollars of local economic activity.
Currently, Sapinero Mesa is subdivided into five residential building lots. Despite the existence of a conservation easement on the property, five homes up to 12,500 square feet each could be constructed on the property. Making matters worse, up to twenty garages, stables, sheds, and other outbuildings could be constructed. This kind of development would spoil the land's character forever.
