Description
This is an Image of Sleeping Ute Mountain in Colorado, captured during a Summer sunset.
Ute Mountain, also known as Ute Peak or Sleeping Ute Mountain, is a peak within the Ute Mountains, a small mountain range in the southwestern corner of Colorado. It is on the northern edge of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe Reservation. The Reservation forms the southwestern corner of the state and of Montezuma County.
“They were hunters and gatherers who lived nomadically throughout the geographic area we now know as the Four Corner states: Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona. These people are the Ute Mountain Tribe. As a matter of fact, the state of Utah gets its name from these people. Those mountains across the valley are the Sleeping Ute Mountain range. The Sleeping Ute Mountain once spoke to Chief Ouray, leader of the Ute Mountain Tribe.“
‘You know me as the Sleeping Ute Mountain, Chief. You and your people, along with other living creatures, reside on my slopes. Well, in the very old days there were Evil Ones causing much trouble. I, a Great Warrior God, came to help fight against the Evil Ones.
‘Though I am mighty, the Evil Ones were a formidable foe and the battle that ensued was ferocious. I braced my feet upon the land to strike a mighty blow; as I swung my weapon, my feet began to fold the land beneath them. My powerful strike sent the Evil Ones tumbling with such force that a crater formed where they landed. They answered back and I was wounded. My strength proved too much for the Evil Ones. I was bloodied, but I was victorious.
‘When the Evil Ones were defeated, our battleground, the earth, had been pushed into mountains and valleys and lakes. I lay down to rest, exhausted from the fight. I fell into a deep sleep to recover, but the wound I had received in battle poured blood that ran down the valleys and filled the lakes. You know my blood well, for it is the living water all creatures need to drink in order to survive.
‘I have to change my blankets throughout the year, four times for the four seasons. You can tell when I am changing my blanket because fog or clouds settle over my head. When I am sleeping under the light green blanket, you will know it is spring. When I sleep under the dark green blanket it is summer. During the fall I sleep under a blanket that is yellow and red. A white blanket keeps me warm while sleeping during winter.
‘Sometimes, when I am pleased with you, my people, I let a few rain clouds slip out of my pockets. You can see these clouds gathered on my highest peaks. The rain clouds bring life. The water feeds grasses, nuts, berries, and roots. You eat these and you also eat the flesh of animals that eat these grasses, nuts, berries, and roots. These plants cannot survive without my blood, water. You cannot survive without it either.
‘Chief Ouray, I want you to remember something; though you find me resting now, know that I will rise again to help you in the fight against your enemies.’
