Escalante Canyon, Delta County, Colorado...REALLY Off The Beaten Path. On any given day of the year, you will see very little to remind you of the world outside of these canyon walls. Escalante Canyon is located about 15 miles north of Delta, Colorado, just west of Hwy 50. There is a sign along the Hwy.
Escalante Canyon, Delta County, Colorado...REALLY Off The Beaten Path,The trip starts by slowly climbing you down into Escalante Canyon. This is a dirt road trip that you can take almost all the way to Utah, if the creek isn't running too high. About 2 miles from Hwy 50 is a great rafting put in. Read more here for information on rafting this section of the Gunnison River.
There are stretches of private land along the road, so please be respectful of these land owners. These areas are well marked.
Escalante Canyon in Delta County, Colorado is a place where green pastures meet red rock canyons and sandstone cliffs. Wildlife sightings are common. Here you can expect to see Mule Deer, Desert Bighorn and Turkey and all types of birds both large and small.
The scenery just gets more spectacular as you head back further into the canyon.
Along the route you will pass a few old cabins. The first noteworthy one is called Walker Cabin. Feel free to get out and explore this old building, but remember is it an old building and be careful. Walker Cabin is an old brick house that was built using mud from the yard as mortar until the family could afford to coat the outside with concrete.
The next cabin is that of Captain Henry A. Smith. This is truly remarkable due to all the work Captain Smith put into the cabin. He carved out a bed and a smaller niche for his gun. He also included a secret room so he could hide from intruders. This is a must stop place along the drive through Escalante Canyon.
The road continues on for many more miles from Captain Smith's cabin before you get to where Escalante Creek crosses the road.
Escalante Canyon, Delta County, Colorado...REALLY Off The Beaten Path
If the creek is running too high, this might be the stopping point for most people.
But it's well worth the drive to get away from it all and see some beautiful canyon country. As I said before this is a REALLY off the beaten path place. I usually see more deer and bighorn sheep than people.
Not much information is available on the internet, or anywhere, for this wonderful canyon. There is a brochure put out by the BLM, that does detail the road and some hiking in the area.
Escalante Canyon is almost 1900 acres and is part of the Dominguez-Escalante Canyon National Conservation Area. Escalante Canyon is 1300 feet deep cut by Escalante Creek.
